KIKI SMITH
Finger Bowl, 1995, fine silver bowl
Finger tips aggressively pushing up cover the interior of Kiki Smith’s Finger Bowl. This solid, fine silver table centerpiece is sixteen inches in diameter, six and one-half inches high, and is elevated by three fingers.
The sculpture originates as a convex dome of clay the surface of which is gouged and scratched by fingers. The clay is then covered with wax and the inside of the resulting concave form shows fingers protruding up from its surface. This wax bowl is then cast in “fine silver” (purer than sterling) by Dominick Ranieri Sculpture Casting in New York.
This piece was first conceived by the artist in 1986. At that time, she could only make a wax form for the art work but has always wanted to see it completed in silver. ARTES MAGNUS is pleased to have helped her realize her vision.
The edition is limited to 25 and is signed and numbed on the bottom. Every wax mold is hand chased by the artist, making each piece unique.
