MEYER VAISMAN
Leo, 1992-93, Ceramic Toby Mug
The late Leo Castelli was honored by Meyer Vaisman at the 35th Anniversary of the Castelli Gallery in 1993 by characterizing Mr. Castelli on this Toby mug. This art form, a popular British classic since the 18th Century, has been appropriated and includes a handle depicting works of five artists who were represented by this famous art world personality.
MEYER VAISMAN has created an edition of ceramic toby mugs entitled Leo. The artist has adapted the traditional character jug, which first appeared in Staffordshire, England in the mid-eighteenth century, and has been a popular collectable ever since.
Meyer Vaisman chose Leo Castelli in honor of the 35th Anniversary of the Leo Castelli Gallery. The handle depicts the works of five artists who were represented by this famous art world personality during his career.
The edition, which has been published by ARTES MAGNUS, is limited to 100. The caricature was executed by Robert Grossman and the mug is manufactured by Kevin Francis Ceramics in Staffordshire. Each work is handmade, hand-painted, signed and numbered.
This edition is also available for purchase through Sotheby's Fine Arts' "Hot Off The Press" collection, where you can also find additional images of the editions featured. Please visit the Sotheby’s Website for more information.
